DAY 1 ATHENS – CATANIA – TAORMINA
Flight to Catania via intermediate station. Arrival and immediate departure for beautiful Taormina. Transfer and check-in at our hotel. Overnight.
DAY 2 TAORMINA – AETNA – TAORMINA
After breakfast we will depart for Europe’s largest and highest active volcano, Etna. Its name probably comes from the Greek word aetho, which means “to burn”. We will drive to the foot of the mountain and take a cable car (individual expense) to the top, where in a special vehicle (individual expense) we will see up close small or large craters, active and inactive. Return to Taormina. Overnight.
DAY 3 TAORMINA – AKRAGANTAS – TAORMINA
Breakfast and departure for the historical “Valley of the Temples” of Akraganta. We will get to know the impressive, preserved complex of ancient Greek Temples of Sicily and we will tour on foot the Sacred Way of the ancient city. We will admire the Temples of Hera, Omonia, Herakles, Dioskouri and Olympian Zeus. Free time and return to Taormina. Overnight.
DAY 4 TAORMINA – SYRACUSES – TAORMINA
After breakfast we will depart for Syracuse. Arrival and guided tour of the most important monuments of the archaeological park, such as the ancient Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheater and the “Ear of Dionysus”. We continue with the historical center, located on the islet of Ortygias. We will see the Temple of Apollo, the square of Archimedes, the fountain of Aretusa and the Duomo square with the Cathedral. Free time and return to Taormina. Overnight.
DAY 5 TAORMINA – MESSINA – TAORMINA
Breakfast and departure for Messina, the third largest city in Sicily and capital of the homonymous province. The city was founded by Greek settlers as Zagli and a little later took its current name, in honor of the Peloponnesian Messina. Return to Taormina. We will explore on foot the picturesque streets with the Neoclassical mansions and we will end up at its imposing ancient Greek theater, Teatro Greco, with its amazing view of the Ionian Sea. Overnight.
DAY 6 TAORMINA – CATANIA – ATHENS
After breakfast we will depart for Catania, the “Black City”, as it is called, as the lava of the volcano was the building material for its buildings. Arrival and walking tour of the old town. We will see the baroque squares, the black and white Megara, the Cathedral, the Elephant Fountain, the central shopping street Via Etnea, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Massimo Bellini Opera, etc. Free time for coffee and lunch. Then transfer to the airport and board the flight to Athens.
